How do you know if someone is well educated?

I think it depends on what your definition of well educated is. For some people well educated means they graduated high school. For others it is a college degree.

For some it could be based off of their accomplishments. Take Steve Jobs for an example. He had a rotten life growing up, dropped out of college but look at all of his accomplishments despite everything else. I would say he was a well educated man.

So it doesn't have to be based on education. There's book learning and then there's street learning. Some people have a lot of both and some people have more in one area then the other.

Education is not based on the number of degrees you have or where you obtained them. In order to determine one's level of education is merely a look into their own personal database (brain) and how they present it to those around them.
I can learn more about a person during an interview by finding an array of topics they are familiar and listening to them talk about them opposed to reading their resume.
This is a subject with no specific answer. You may find yourself in a position where the person is horrible with Grammar (I have many of these friends) yet their knowledge life, the economy, finances, weather, physics or mathematics may be off the charts. Then again, you may encounter someone who excelled in College, received a 4.0 GPA in Mathematics and they could not determine the cost of an item on the 50% off rack at Target without a calculator.
To each their own but be weary of those whose presentation is perfect. You might end up with a terminology guru who has no idea how to get from point A to B without extensive help.

I believe if you're well-educated, you can string together a legible sentence.
